چکیده

Studies of torsional properties of natural silk fibers seem to open a new window in understanding the correlation between their extraordinary mechanical properties and their microscopic structure. In this paper, the torsional relaxation profiles of single-stranded Bombyx mori silk was obtained from our experiment, and a prominent under-damping mode was identified. It was concluded that the single damping mode is an implication that along the transverse plane, the silk fiber has a quasi-periodic arrangement at higher level structure. The torsional rigidity and internal environmental viscosity have been obtained from the torsional profile. Due to the potential enhancement of tensile strength by twisting the silk fibres, trials for various twisting cycles were carried out in order to build a quantitative relation between the extent of twist and the tensile strength. An obvious enhancement with a non-monotonous trend is observed, bringing an optimal increase of 30% above the original strength.

Reinforcement of Glass Ionomer Cement: Incorporating with Silk Fiber

The aim of this study was to synthesis of glass ionomer-silk fiber composite and to evaluate the effect of adding natural degummed silk fiber on the mechanical properties of glass ionomer cement (GIC). For this purpose, natural degummed silk fibers with 1 mm in length and 13-16 µm in diameter were added to the ceramic component of a commercial glass ionomer cement in 1, 3 and 5 wt. %. Compressi...

Torsion of monofilament and polyfilament sutures under tension decreases suture strength and increases risk of suture fracture.

BACKGROUND A continuous running suture is the preferential method for abdominal closure. In this technique the suture is secured with an initial knot and successive tissue bites are taken. At each tissue bite, the needle is rotated through the tissue; in doing so, the suture can twist around the knot which acts as an anchor. OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of axial torsional forces on sutur...

Natural Silk as a Photonics Component: a Study on Its Light Guiding and Nonlinear Optical Properties.

Silk fibers are expected to become a pathway to biocompatible and bioresorbable waveguides, which could be used to deliver localized optical power for various applications, e.g., optical therapy or imaging inside living tissue. Here, for the first time, the linear and nonlinear optical properties of natural silk fibers have been studied. The waveguiding properties of silk fibroin of largely unp...
